“Shehbaz Sharif noted that Durrani’s political career was characterized by his dedication to democratic governance and his tireless work for the people of Sindh,” read a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. “His services as Speaker of the Sindh Assembly will be remembered as a chapter of dignity, balance, and maturity in Pakistan’s parliamentary history.”
The prime minister also lauded Durrani’s efforts in promoting provincial harmony and contributing to Pakistan’s democratic fabric, especially during times of political uncertainty.
Born into a respected political family in Shikarpur, Agha Siraj Durrani had deep roots in Sindh’s political culture. A member of the Pakistan Peoples Party since his early political career, Durrani served in various capacities, including as a minister and later as Speaker of the Sindh Assembly.
He was elected as Speaker of the Sindh Assembly in 2013, a position he held for nearly a decade. Under his leadership, the assembly witnessed key legislative developments that strengthened local governance and social welfare initiatives. Durrani’s leadership style was assertive yet inclusive, often mediating between conflicting political interests to maintain legislative harmony.
Throughout his political journey, Durrani remained a close ally of the Bhutto-Zardari family and a vocal advocate of Sindh’s rights. He played a crucial role in implementing the PPP’s vision of provincial empowerment and social justice, often defending Sindh’s position in national debates related to resource distribution and autonomy.
