Pakistan’s agricultural sector is on the cusp of a significant transformation with the formal inauguration of three pivotal projects under the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC)’s Green Corporate Initiative. The ceremony was graced by Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, federal and provincial ministers, and senior government officials, highlighting the national commitment to agricultural development.
The Smart Agri Farm project was launched with the goal of training local farmers. Given that agriculture accounts for 95 percent of the country’s farming output, this initiative is critical. It aims to equip farmers with modern techniques and knowledge, ensuring they can leverage technology for higher yields and sustainability. The training provided here is not just about using new tools but also about understanding sustainable farming practices that can adapt to climate change challenges.
One of the standout achievements under this initiative is the establishment of Green Agri Malls. Already, 25 such facilities are operational across Punjab, with plans to expand to 250 nationwide by the year’s end. These malls are not just retail spaces for agricultural inputs but also centers where farmers can access modern irrigation technologies. They will serve as hubs for the dissemination of advanced farming equipment and practices, significantly improving water use efficiency and crop productivity.
The Agri Research Facility, another project inaugurated, is set to become a beacon for agricultural innovation in Pakistan. This facility will focus on research that can lead to the development of new crop varieties, pest-resistant strains, and more efficient farming methods. The presence of officials from the agricultural sector during the inauguration underscored the importance of this facility in driving forward the agricultural research agenda of the country.
A key aspect of these projects is the introduction of advanced agricultural machinery. Recognizing the financial constraints many farmers face, the initiative has made provisions for leasing high-tech equipment rather than outright purchasing. This innovative approach not only makes technology accessible but also affordable, encouraging wider adoption across the farming community.
Both General Asim Munir and CM Maryam Nawaz expressed their full satisfaction with the progress of the Green Corporate Initiative.
