A special court in Islamabad has indicted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the Toshakhana-II case.
The case revolves around allegations of misusing state gifts and undervaluing high-value items received during their tenure.
On Thursday, Special Court Judge Shahrukh Arjumand formally framed charges against the couple. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) accuses Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi of receiving a Bulgari jewelry set from Saudi Arabia but failing to submit it to Toshakhana, as required by law. Toshakhana is the state depository where officials are mandated to submit valuable gifts received during official engagements.
According to the FIA, the jewelry set is valued at an estimated Rs71.5 million based on official records. However, the accused allegedly had it privately appraised at just Rs5.8 million. The FIA contends this undervaluation allowed them to retain the item in violation of Toshakhana rules.
Both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi have categorically denied these allegations. Their defense maintains that the charges are politically motivated and lack substantial evidence.
In October, the special court approved bail for Bushra Bibi, allowing her release. However, her husband—former Prime Minister Imran Khan—remains incarcerated due to other legal cases. Notably, on November 20, the Islamabad High Court granted bail to Imran Khan in the Toshakhana-II case, yet he continues to face detention in unrelated charges.
This indictment is one of many legal hurdles confronting the PTI founder and other senior party leaders. Last week, charges were also framed against Imran Khan in connection with an attack on General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, which occurred on May 9, 2023. This high-profile case has implicated several PTI leaders, including Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Sheikh Asad Shafiq, Raja Basharat, Zartaj Gul, and over 100 other individuals.
All defendants in the GHQ attack case, including Imran Khan, have pleaded not guilty. The case underscores the mounting legal troubles faced by the PTI leadership amid a politically charged atmosphere in Pakistan.
These developments come at a critical juncture for the PTI, a party grappling with leadership crises and declining public support. The indictments against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi add to the growing list of legal challenges that threaten the party’s political future. Critics argue that the cases are part of a broader effort to undermine the PTI’s influence, while supporters emphasize the need for accountability in public office.
With multiple cases pending, Imran Khan’s legal battles are far from over. The Toshakhana-II case, in particular, raises important questions about the transparency and accountability of public officials. As proceedings continue, the outcomes of these cases will likely have significant implications for Pakistan’s political landscape.
