A police officer injured during an attack on Assistant Commissioner Saeed Manan in Kurram has succumbed to his injuries. The incident has further escalated tensions in the already volatile region, prompting intensified security operations to restore peace and apprehend the perpetrators.
The attack occurred on Friday in the Bushara area of Upper Kurram, where Assistant Commissioner Saeed Manan of Boshehra was present with law enforcement personnel. Unidentified assailants opened fire, injuring both the Assistant Commissioner and a police officer identified as Syed Ashiq Hussain.
Despite being rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) in Parachinar, Syed Ashiq Hussain succumbed to his injuries on Saturday. Assistant Commissioner Saeed Manan, however, is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
Following the attack, a massive search operation was launched by the district administration, police, and security agencies to track down the attackers. The incident has highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining peace in Kurram, a region plagued by tribal conflicts and violence.
In a related development, a joint security operation was conducted in Bagan from January 19 to 21, resulting in the recovery of a large cache of illegal weapons. The operation, carried out with the cooperation of local elders and residents, aimed to eliminate criminal elements and establish lasting peace in the region.
Kurram has long been a hotspot for tribal disputes and violence. The recent attack on the Assistant Commissioner and the subsequent death of a police officer underscore the fragile security situation in the area.
Earlier this month, security forces took control of Bagan Bazaar in Kurram as part of efforts to restore order. During the operation, several bunkers belonging to the Watezai and Tori tribes in Irfani Kalay were vacated. These measures were part of a broader strategy to address the root causes of unrest and prevent further violence.
Deputy Commissioner Kurram, Javedullah Mehsud, had earlier announced plans for a major operation in four locations across the district to eliminate terrorist elements. He also mentioned that displaced persons were being relocated to Tal and Hangu for their safety.
The recent violence comes just days after a peace agreement was reached between warring tribes, raising concerns about the sustainability of such agreements in the face of deep-seated animosities.
The death of Syed Ashiq Hussain has sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community and the local population. It serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by those working to maintain peace in conflict-ridden areas like Kurram.
As security forces continue their operations, the focus remains on apprehending the culprits and preventing further attacks. The cooperation of local elders and residents will be crucial in ensuring the success of these efforts.
