Pakistan officially began its eighth term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday, marking a significant diplomatic achievement. The national flag of Pakistan was installed in front of the UNSC chamber at the UN Headquarters in New York during a ceremony welcoming the five new non-permanent members for the 2025-26 term.

The event saw the flags of Pakistan, Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia hoisted, symbolizing their induction into the 15-member Security Council. These nations replaced Japan, Ecuador, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland, whose terms concluded on December 31, 2024.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Alternate Permanent Representative to the United Nations, had the honor of installing the national flag during the ceremony. In his remarks, Ambassador Ahmad reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to the core principles of the UN Charter, emphasizing international peace, security, and friendly relations among nations.

Ambassador Ahmad stressed Pakistan’s resolve to remain a strong advocate for people under foreign occupation and oppression, championing their right to self-determination. He highlighted the importance of cooperative multilateralism, with the UN at its center, to address complex global challenges.

“We need to address the root causes of longstanding and emerging conflicts, prioritize dialogue and diplomacy, and support confidence-building measures at both regional and global levels,” Ambassador Ahmad said. He underscored Pakistan’s commitment to reducing tensions, halting the arms race, and fostering an environment conducive to peace, stability, and development.

As a non-permanent member, Pakistan will collaborate with fellow members to pursue just and peaceful solutions to issues on the Council’s agenda. The nation plans to utilize tools such as conflict prevention, peacekeeping, and peacebuilding to achieve lasting peace.

Ambassador Ahmad emphasized the need for adherence to the UN Charter and international law, stating, “Our success lies in upholding the UN Charter and ensuring effective implementation of the Security Council’s decisions.” He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to addressing the suffering of millions affected by conflicts worldwide.

During its two-year term, Pakistan will assume the presidency of the UNSC in July 2025, based on the alphabetical rotation of member states. This prestigious role will allow Pakistan to influence the Council’s agenda and contribute to shaping global discussions on peace and security.

Additionally, Pakistan will secure a seat on the Islamic State (ISIS) and Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee. This committee oversees the designation of individuals and groups as terrorists and imposes sanctions, providing Pakistan a pivotal role in international counterterrorism efforts.

The Security Council, the most powerful body of the United Nations, comprises 15 members. Five permanent members – the United States, China, Russia, France, and the United Kingdom – hold veto power, while 10 non-permanent seats are allocated based on geographic regions, with five members replaced annually.

The UNSC’s primary responsibility is to maintain international peace and security. It has the authority to make legally binding decisions, impose sanctions, and authorize the use of force against states when necessary.

This marks Pakistan’s eighth term as a non-permanent member, reflecting the nation’s longstanding commitment to multilateral diplomacy. Over the years, Pakistan has been an active participant in UN peacekeeping missions and has consistently advocated for the resolution of global conflicts through dialogue and cooperation.

As Pakistan begins its two-year term, it brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to addressing global challenges. The country’s participation in the Security Council is expected to strengthen its role on the international stage and reinforce its dedication to fostering peace, justice, and security worldwide.
