The Punjab government has implemented a ban on the production, distribution, and trade of plastic bags across the province. This decisive move was announced by Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb on Tuesday, coinciding with World Environment Day celebrations in Lahore.
Speaking at an event in Lahore, Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized the government’s commitment to curbing plastic pollution. “Today, in the first stage, a ban has been imposed on plastic bags. It is the government’s policy to ban plastic bags,” she declared. Aurangzeb also underscored the need for legislative amendments to the motor vehicle ordinance to address the broader environmental concerns, particularly targeting the burning of plastic and tyres, which contribute significantly to pollution.
The decision to ban plastic bags was initially announced by the provincial government in April, identifying plastic as a source of cancer and various other diseases. The enforcement of this policy marks a crucial step in the government’s ongoing efforts to protect public health and the environment.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz reiterated the government’s dedication to the plastic ban policy, especially in high-use areas such as hotels, restaurants, and eateries. She emphasized that the harmful effects of plastic on the environment and human health necessitate strict enforcement of the ban. “The ‘no to plastic’ campaign aims to reduce environmental pollution and promote eco-friendly initiatives,” the Chief Minister stated.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif also took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to underscore the importance of collective efforts in safeguarding the environment. On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Prime Minister highlighted the necessity of collaborative action to ensure the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants.
“We can certainly make a significant impact on the health and sustainability of our environment by taking proactive steps towards nurturing and cultivating forests, reviving and replenishing dwindling water sources, and rehabilitating and revitalizing exhausted soils,” PM Shahbaz Sharif remarked. He urged the nation to embrace the responsibility of environmental stewardship and work towards a sustainable future, emphasizing that “the time for action is now.”
