The United States has called for a comprehensive investigation into election irregularities in Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of addressing such issues within the framework of the rule of law. This statement was made during a press briefing at the Foreign Press Center by Matthew Miller, the spokesperson for the US State Department, highlighting Washington’s commitment to democratic principles worldwide.
Miller stated, “Any election irregularities need to be fully investigated, answered, and dealt with consistent with the rule of law. This is true not only for Pakistan but for every country around the globe.” His remarks reflect the US stance on promoting transparency and accountability in electoral processes across nations.
During the same briefing, Miller dismissed allegations made by India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP accused the US State Department of orchestrating targeted attacks on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party. These claims followed reports by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), which the BJP cited as evidence of a US-backed agenda to destabilize India.
Miller categorically rejected these allegations, calling them “absurd” and “completely untrue.” He reiterated the US commitment to maintaining strong bilateral relations with India, stating, “We are focused on our partnership with India, and associating our support for press freedom with undermining a close ally is baseless.”
Defending the US’s global support for journalistic integrity, Miller elaborated on initiatives aimed at empowering journalists worldwide. “We provide professional development training for journalists as part of our commitment to freedom of expression and press freedom,” he explained.
Miller’s remarks underline the US’s position on safeguarding press freedom, even amid contentious allegations from foreign governments. He added that promoting transparency and accountability aligns with broader democratic values, including those shared with allies like India.
Turning attention to an investigation into the alleged involvement of Indian agents in a murder plot targeting a US citizen, Miller confirmed that Washington has raised its concerns with Indian officials at senior levels.
“This matter is one we regularly discuss with the Government of India,” Miller stated. He emphasized the importance of accountability, confirming that the US has been briefed on the commission of inquiry established by Indian authorities to address the allegations.
