The United States has expressed its support for Pakistan’s recent decision to launch Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, aimed at eradicating terrorism and extremism within the country. This announcement was made following the approval of the operation by the Apex Committee of the National Action Plan (NAP), chaired by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. The operation seeks to integrate and synergize multiple efforts to decisively combat the twin menaces of terrorism and extremism.
During a press briefing, US Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the shared interest between Washington and Islamabad in combating regional security threats. “The Pakistani people have suffered tremendously from terrorist attacks. No country should have to suffer such acts of terror,” Miller stated. He reiterated the United States’ commitment to supporting Pakistan’s initiatives to combat terrorism, ensuring the safety and security of its citizens in a manner that upholds the rule of law and human rights.
Miller highlighted the robust partnership between the US and Pakistan on security issues, which includes high-level counterterrorism dialogues and capacity-building programs. “Our partnership with Pakistan on security issues includes our high-level counterterrorism dialogue, including funding robust counterterrorism capacity-building programs and supporting a series of US-Pakistan military-to-military engagements,” he added. This partnership is aimed at enhancing Pakistan’s capabilities to tackle terrorism effectively and sustainably.
Operation Azm-e-Istehkam has been launched with the objective of integrating various lines of effort to comprehensively and decisively address terrorism and extremism. The operation will not only focus on military measures but also on the politico-diplomatic domain to curtail the operational space for terrorists through regional cooperation. The initiative underscores the Pakistani government’s resolve to eradicate terrorism and restore peace and stability in the region.
expressing support for Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts, the US also emphasized the importance of protecting human rights and adhering to the rule of law. Miller pointed out that efforts to combat terrorism should also ensure the protection of human rights, highlighting that the safety and security of citizens must be achieved in a lawful and ethical manner.
Miller was also questioned about a recent incident in Pakistan where a violent mob killed a blasphemy suspect and subsequently set his body and the police station on fire. The suspect was a local tourist accused of blasphemy. “We are extremely concerned by those reports. Violence or the threat of violence against another person is never an acceptable form of expression,” Miller responded. He reiterated the US stance against blasphemy laws globally, including in Pakistan, as they jeopardize human rights and fundamental freedoms such as the freedom of religion or belief.
The US’s support for Operation Azm-e-Istehkam is a testament to the shared commitment between the two nations to enhance regional security. The operation’s comprehensive approach aims to address the root causes of terrorism and extremism, promoting a secure and stable environment for the Pakistani people. By combining military efforts with political and diplomatic measures, Pakistan aims to create a multifaceted strategy that will lead to sustainable peace and security.
