President Asif Ali Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to fostering regional marine cooperation, promoting sustainable development, and ensuring peace in the Indian Ocean region. Addressing the Third China-Indian Ocean Region Forum on Blue Economy Cooperation, held from December 14 to 16 in Kunming, China, the president highlighted collective efforts to combat challenges like climate change, pollution, and ecosystem degradation.

The forum, organized by the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), focused on promoting collaboration among maritime nations to enhance the blue economy. President Zardari, in a video message, underscored Pakistan’s readiness to partner with stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and prosperous Indian Ocean region.

“The Indian Ocean is a shared lifeline, brimming with immense economic opportunities,” said President Zardari. He emphasized the need for joint action to harness the ocean’s vast resources while addressing pressing global challenges.

Highlighting Pakistan’s efforts in enhancing the blue economy, the president detailed key initiatives, including the National Maritime Policy and programs focused on sustainable fisheries and marine conservation. He also mentioned the Living Indus Project, a national initiative aimed at combating pollution and protecting ecosystems, reflecting Pakistan’s proactive approach toward environmental sustainability.

A significant highlight of President Zardari’s address was the role of the Gwadar Port in bolstering regional connectivity. Developed under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the port is transforming into a strategic hub for trade and maritime economic growth.

“Gwadar Port stands as a symbol of regional connectivity and trade facilitation,” President Zardari noted, emphasizing its potential to drive maritime economic progress not only for Pakistan but for the entire Indian Ocean region.

The president praised Pakistan’s partnership with China under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), describing it as a cornerstone for knowledge exchange, technological advancement, and marine conservation.

“China’s Global Development Initiative (GDI) aligns perfectly with Pakistan’s vision of environmental stewardship and transnational collaboration,” said President Zardari. He commended CIDCA’s efforts to embed sustainability in the forum’s agenda, particularly through its focus on capacity building and support for island nations.

President Zardari expressed optimism about the outcomes of the China-Indian Ocean Region Forum, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation in addressing marine challenges.

“This forum is a testament to our collective resolve to protect marine resources, promote the blue economy, and create a better future for generations to come,” he stated. He also called on member nations to collaborate in safeguarding the ocean’s ecosystem while harnessing its economic potential.

The forum brought together leaders, policymakers, and experts from across the Indian Ocean region to explore opportunities for maritime collaboration. Topics such as sustainable development, climate resilience, and economic partnerships were at the forefront of discussions.

President Zardari reiterated the urgent need to tackle climate change, pollution, and environmental degradation. He stressed the importance of sustainable development strategies to mitigate these issues, particularly in vulnerable coastal and island nations.

The president’s remarks resonate with Pakistan’s broader environmental agenda, which prioritizes the conservation of natural resources and the development of eco-friendly industries.

The concept of the blue economy, which integrates economic development with marine ecosystem health, has gained prominence globally. President Zardari’s address reaffirmed Pakistan’s position as a key player in the Indian Ocean region, advocating for balanced growth and environmental preservation.

Pakistan’s initiatives, such as sustainable fisheries, marine conservation, and the development of maritime infrastructure, align with international efforts to promote the blue economy. By actively participating in forums like the China-Indian Ocean Region Forum, Pakistan continues to build partnerships that advance shared goals of peace, progress, and sustainability.
