The International Monetary Fund has proposed increasing financial assistance under Pakistan’s Benazir Income Support Programme to help low-income families cope with rising inflation and living costs.

According to sources involved in ongoing negotiations between Pakistani authorities and the IMF, the Fund has recommended raising the quarterly BISP Kafalat payment by Rs. 5,500. If approved, the stipend would increase from the current Rs. 14,500 to Rs. 20,000 per quarter.

The proposal is currently under discussion as part of broader talks related to Pakistan’s economic reform program and fiscal strategy. Officials from the IMF are holding meetings with the Federal Board of Revenue and other government departments to review taxation measures, social protection spending, and budget targets.

Sources said discussions on Tuesday focused heavily on expanding social safety nets through higher BISP payments while also evaluating tax exemptions and fiscal reforms. The IMF believes additional support may help vulnerable households manage the impact of inflation, increasing utility costs, and higher food prices.

Government officials have not yet confirmed whether the proposed increase will be approved in full. Further negotiations are expected in the coming days to finalize the amount and determine how the revised payments would fit within the overall IMF program framework.

The BISP remains Pakistan’s largest social welfare initiative, providing financial assistance to millions of low-income families across the country.
