The Federal Constitutional Court of Pakistan has approved a significant salary increase for its employees, effectively raising their take-home pay by around 50 percent through newly introduced allowances. The decision marks a notable revision in the court’s internal compensation structure.
According to an official order, the Chief Justice exercised authority under constitutional provisions to implement the changes. Under the revised structure, all court employees will receive a Judicial Allowance equal to 50 percent of their basic salary. In addition, a Utility Allowance amounting to another 50 percent of basic pay has also been granted, further boosting overall earnings.
Budget Impact and Implementation
The court clarified that the financial impact of the Federal Constitutional Court salary increase will be managed within its existing budget for the fiscal year 2025–26. This means no additional financial burden will be placed on the federal government.
Timing Raises Questions
However, the move has sparked debate due to its timing. Pakistan is currently facing economic challenges, including austerity measures and rising fuel prices linked to global geopolitical tensions. Despite these conditions, the salary revision proceeded without opposition from the government or international financial institutions overseeing economic reforms.
Broader Implications
The decision highlights the autonomy of judicial institutions in managing internal affairs. At the same time, it raises broader questions about compensation policies during periods of economic restraint.
